Ember’s Guide to PURR-fect Credit

My credit score is a perfect 850. How did I do it? Here are my tips and tricks to purr-fect credit.

1. Be a Cat

Be a Cat: Cats rarely spend money on anything, so find a daddy like I did and he will buy you everything. If you can’t, I have some other tips for you.

2. Rebuilding

When should I start looking to rebuild my credit? Once the discharge has been posted to your bureaus. Download the following apps to monitor your credit and be wise about what you're applying for. The number is inquiries on your credit will make your score go down if there are too many inquiries.

  • Experian app – This one is probably the most accurate credit score indicator and it also has tips to improve your score but there isn’t a cute cat involved.
  • Freecreditreport.com – You can get ONE free credit report annually, so do that and dispute anything that doesn’t look right. Don’t go crazy disputing everything that you don’t like because that is a waste of everyone’s time. If you see an account on the report that is showing as NEGATIVE/PAST DUE instead of “Discharged in Bankruptcy”, though, file a dispute on that and send a copy of your discharge notice with the dispute so that it is easy for the person working a t the bureau to make the appropriate change.
  • CreditKarma app – The scores on here are aspirational for sure but they can recommend some credit cards with good approval odds…just watch out for fees!

3. Cars

My personal favorite is a Purr-sche or a Meow-di but not everyone can afford them. If you need a car after filing for bankruptcy, here are some good places to go.

  • Bankruptcydrive.com
  • 722redemption.com
  • Tim McClung (623) 312-0203: Tim is great and I’ve sent lots of my friends to him.  Granted the loan terms won’t be great right after a bankruptcy but Tim can also help you refinance the loan once your credit bounces back.

4. Banking

Let meow be the first to tell you…the only person that has a relationship with your bank or credit union is YOU. There’s a reason that you have an account number at your financial institution. THEY ARE NOT THAT INTO YOU. Knowing that, here are my banking recommendations:

  • Discover.com: I’m not talking about the credit card. I’m talking about the bank. To my knowledge, this is the only bank that gives you a DEBIT card with 1% cash back on purchases! I have known some people who weren’t approved, though. If you are approved, though, you can make deposits on your phone or at LOTS of Allpoint ATMs. Most of the ATMs that I’ve seen are inside Walgreens, Target or gas stations.
  • CapitalOne.com: I know. I know. You probably included them in your bankruptcy because everyone has a CapitalOne card. They are “what’s in your wallet.” Still, their bank is super convenient, like Discover but they will give you a Mastercard Debit card that is accepted just about everywhere.
  • Chase Bank: if you just MUST have a brick and mortar bank to go to, my favorite is Chase. Credit unions and some Wells Fargo and Bank of America deposit accounts are pledged as security for any credit accounts and that’s why I don’t prefer them. Chase doesn’t do that at all and that’s why they are my favorite standard bank.

5. Credit Cards

BE CAREFUL!!! These are not your friends. I can’t tell you how many people are addicted or dependent on these things. Stop!!! You can rent a car, book a flight or book a hotel room with a debit card and most people aren’t booking trips to the Turks and Caicos soon after filing bankruptcy anyway. When you are ready to dip your toe back into the shark-infested pool of credit cards, here are my favorite cards for rebuilding credit.

  • CapitalOne: yes, I know that you probably just included them into your bankruptcy and they know that, too. They also know that you can’t do that again for a while. I have personally seen CapitalOne give someone an UNSECURED card after getting a Chapter 7 discharge. Just wait until you see a bump in your credit score after discharge (See #1)
  • OpenSky: this is a secured card with no fees and they are a pretty good card for rebuilding. The key is no fees!!!
  • Chime Credit Builder: this is an interesting secured card that essentially functions as a delayed payment debit card. You spend up to the balance in your deposit account and then they take the balance out of the deposit account monthly to pay off the credit card. Pretty nifty…and they report to the credit agencies.
  • FirstProgress: like OpenSky, this is just another no-fee secured credit card.

Other ways that I save money

  • Use apps to clip digital coupons at the grocery store.
  • Upside: Save money on gas by using the Upside app.  Here is my link. https://upside.app.link/S39WN
  • MUSIC: Free music at iHeartRadio.com or on the iHeartRadio app. It’s cheaper than paying for music. If you pay for Amazon Prime, you also get Amazon Music for free.
  • Amazon: did you know that Amazon has cheaper prices than most normal stores…AND THEY DELIVER. I was going to buy vitamins at Walgreens but checked Amazon and the same vitamins were half the price!!!
  • Car insurance: Call Gary Gibson at (702) 577-5209.  I was surprised that he was the cheapest I could find and he’s with STATE FARM!!!
